Hanging Rope

Our Gourmet Mushroom Grow Kit provides three 30cm inoculated logs, each bearing a unique strain of gourmet mushrooms: Shiitake, Oyster, and Lion’s Mane. These logs are pre-drilled with holes, filled with mushroom plugs, and sealed with beeswax from our beehives. Grow your own mushrooms at home and enjoy a piece of Bucksbury Farm’s ancient woodland.

Shiitake Mushrooms

Shiitake mushrooms are the second most cultivated mushrooms in the world. They have a firm texture and add great flavour to foods, especially in Asian cuisine. Shiitake mushrooms also have medicinal properties, including lowering cholesterol and stimulating the immune system.

  • Incubation Period: 9 months to 2 years
  • Storage Tip: Maintains its taste when dehydrated, making it easy to store large amounts before they spoil.

Oyster Mushrooms

Oyster mushrooms come in a variety of colours and tastes. While they’re commercially grown on substrates like straw or coffee grounds, in nature, they grow on trees, making logs an excellent choice.

  • Incubation Period: Short, allowing harvesting within the fall of the same year
  • Harvest Season: Spring to fall once established.

Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane mushrooms are unique, with white teeth or needles that give them a shaggy appearance. These mushrooms can grow very large, up to 40 cm in diameter once mature.

  • Incubation Period: Produces mushrooms in the spring and fall.
  • Medicinal Benefits:
    • Enhances cognitive function and memory
    • Reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression
    • Promotes nerve regeneration
    • Contains bioactive compounds with neuroprotective effects
    • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, boosting the immune system and reducing inflammation.

How to Grow Mushrooms at Home

Mushroom logs need to be kept in a shady, humid, and warm environment with good air circulation to prevent mould. They should be stored near a water source as they need to be kept moist during incubation and fruiting stages. Good storage locations include:

  • Against a Building: Provides shade.
  • South-facing Slope or Basin: Keeps logs warm and humid.
  • Under a Forest Canopy: Prevents direct sunlight from reaching the logs.
  • Underneath Shade Netting: Offers protection from direct sunlight.

Ensure the location is easily accessible. During the summer months, the logs need to be watered at least every couple of days.

Pro tip: Submerge your logs completely underwater for 10 seconds to ensure your logs are completely saturated with water.

Embark on your mushroom-growing journey with our Gourmet Mushroom Grow Kit and enjoy the flavours and health benefits of Shiitake, Oyster, and Lion’s Mane mushrooms right at home.
